No.15 Railway Passenger Car Automatic Coupler

The No.15 coupler is the traditional main-type automatic coupler for standard gauge railway passenger cars in China. It is a lower acting type coupler widely used on ordinary speed passenger coaches such as 22, 25G, 25K and 25T, and it can be coupled with the No.13 coupler used on locomotives and freight cars.

The coupler body is divided into three main parts: the coupler head, the coupler shank and the coupler tail. The head consists of the knuckle, knuckle lock, knuckle thrower and lower lock pin anti-jump device (lower acting, uncoupled from below the coupler). The shank is a hollow box section that transmits longitudinal traction and impact loads, while the tail connects to the coupler yoke, slave plate and buffer.

Three Working Positions

• Closed position: after coupling, the knuckle lock drops and locks the knuckle for normal traction. The distance between the knuckle and the inner side of the coupler jaw is 112-122 mm.
• Open position: lifting the lower lock pin raises the knuckle lock so the car can be uncoupled.
• Full open position: lifting further, the knuckle thrower pushes the knuckle fully open for coupling. The distance between the knuckle and the inner side of the coupler jaw is 220-235 mm.

Main Technical Parameters

Available variants: 15A small clearance coupler (reduced coupler tail pin hole clearance for lower longitudinal impact, widely used on 25K/25T), 15X high strength coupler (C grade cast steel, failure load ≥2256 kN, for quasi-high-speed passenger cars and some passenger locomotives), and other 15C / 15T high strength versions.

Not applicable to: high speed EMU trains, which use tight-lock couplers instead of the No.15 coupler.
