Chinese No.16 No.17 Type Interlocking Couplers For Heavy Load Freight Wagons
1. Overview
To meet the requirements of operating heavy-haul trains on the Daqin Coal Special Railway Line and continuous rotary dumping without uncoupling on car dumper, the research, development and prototype trial production of the Type 17 coupler (interlocking fixed coupler), Type 16 coupler (interlocking rotary coupler) and their matching coupler yokes have been carried out. After strict tests and verification, Type 17 and Type 16 couplers passed the ministerial technical review of the Ministry of Railways and have been batch-mounted on Type C63 special open-top wagons for coal transportation.
2. Structure Introduction
Type 17 coupler mainly consists of coupler body, knuckle, knuckle lifter, knuckle pin, lock assembly, lower lock pin shaft and lower lock pin assembly, etc. All castings are made of Grade E steel. Among them, the knuckle, knuckle lifter, lower lock pin, knuckle pin and lock assembly are identical to those of Type 16 coupler, as shown in the figure.
2.1 Coupler Body Structure
The coupler head is equipped with an interlocking socket, an interlocking spigot, an auxiliary interlocking support and an anti-drop device.The coupler shank features a box section, similar to other couplers.The coupler tail end consists of a spherical end face and automatic centering lugs on both sides, with a spherical radius of 133.5 mm, which mates with the spherical surface of the follower.

2.2 Knuckle, Knuckle Lifter and Lock Assembly
Knuckle: Mainly includes upper draft lug, upper impact lug, locking surface, lock seat surface, knuckle pin hole, etc.
Knuckle lifter: Mainly includes upper shaft, lower shaft, lock seat surface and pusher foot, etc.
Lower lock pin lever: Mainly includes lock stop block, lock, lower lock pin lever shaft hole, etc.
2.3 Lower Lock Pin Shaft and Lower Lock Pin Assembly
Lower lock pin shaft: Mainly includes shaft body, coupler lift lever mounting hole and connecting key, etc.
Lower lock pin assembly: Mainly includes lower lock pin lever, lower lock pin, anti-jump lug, lock shaft, etc.
